My journey in manufacturing started 25 years ago as an apprentice precision manual grinder at a well-respected and established Tool & Die company where attention to detail and thorough training helped me earn my Journeyman Certification. From there, my career took me through preform powdered carbide manufacturing, R&D with a defense contractor, night classes to earn an AAS in Computer-Aided Machine Technology, and work with a steel mill supplier, and a medical parts manufacturer.

Those experiences provided many learning opportunities for me: various shifts, parts ranging from a few ounces to many tons, different materials, programming by hand, with Mastercam, conversational, macros, a wide range of machine makes, models, configurations, and controls. Those learning opportunities prepared me for my most recent roll as an Application Engineer for an Okuma / Tsugami distributor for the past 8 years.

As an AE, some of my responsibilities were: quoting and completing full turnkey projects, machine utilization, spindle probe inspection, automated tool-setter routines, customer machine / control training and documentation, troubleshooting customer issues, automation integration, and efficiency improvements. Working with different machine configurations, a broad spectrum of customers, and vastly differing parts was very exciting and fulfilling.

Spending 25 years in manufacturing has given me a great range of experience and knowledge. While there are many things I could do with my eyes closed at this point, there are also many things I have never seen or attempted. That's what keeps it exciting for me. It's the challenge of the unknown or "never been done before" that makes those successes so rewarding. Every opportunity that I’ve had has prepared me for the next opportunity. This time, it just seemed like going out on my own was the next step. So, that’s what I did.

The manufacturing industry is short on experienced, skilled machinists and programmers.
